Lexus investigates Pedestrian Detection System

Lexus Australia is considering introducing an Advanced Pedestrian Detection system to its Australian product.  The device uses infra-red technology and stereo cameras to monitor objects and pedestrians across the path of the vehicle.  If an object is detected the driver will be alerted by a flashing light on the dash and and an audio cue.  If the driver does not respond to the alerts the device can initiate braking and pretension the front seatbelts in preparation for a collision.  The device is already being used in the US.
